This small, dried, star-shaped pod is from an evergreen tree of the magnolia family from China. The flavour is reminiscent of liquorice and is used as an ingredient of Chinese 5-spice. It can be used in spicy dishes, curries, puddings, cakes biscuits or recipes requiring anise seeds.
